I have not enough one birth,
Grow to me from two roots …
It is a pity, Montenegro did not become
Second my homeland.
These last lines were in two languages beaten out on a monument Vladimir to Vysotsky who decorates the capital of Montenegro – Podgorica.
Montenegro is from Russia at a great distance, but our stories are closely connected.
Despite rich history of two countries, relationship of Russia and Montenegro began only in the 18th century. Then Montenegro was under formal jurisdiction of the Ottoman Empire and had the unique form of statehood – a theocracy with elements of a patrimonial system. In 1711 to the metropolitan of Montenegro Danilo I Petrovich - to Negosh there came ambassadors from Russia who handed to the lord the message from the Russian tsar Peter I with the offer on joint fight against Turkey.
Pyotr Alekseevich's appeal got the ready response in this highland: for Montenegro literally clamped by enemies from all directions, the fact of existence of the great Slavic and coreligion orthodox power had huge value. Anyway, Montenegrins with enthusiasm accepted the offer and opposed Ottoman troops. But soon the message on an unsuccessful Prussian campaign of Peter I and signing of the world with Turks came, Montenegrins remained in private with the strong enemy.
Nevertheless, on July 17, 1712 only eight thousand Montenegrins won against fifty-thousand Turkish army fight on the Tsaryovy Manhole. This Victoria is considered the best-known victory of Montenegrins over Turks; the truth, in two years Ottomans cruelly revenged Montenegrins – hundred twenty thousand Turks intruded in Montenegro, having turned the country into the ashes. Lord Danilo by miracle escaped in one of mountain caves from where he so depicted the foreign policy programme: "I am Moskov, Moskov, Moskov!".
In 1715, having sliped through the Turkish cordons, Danilo arrived to Russia. Pyotr I expressed the regret in connection with misfortune comprehended Montenegro, and sent the diploma to Montenegrins in which wrote about merits of the Montenegro people in the general fight against Turks, promising to give generous help as soon as Northern war ends. In confirmation of the words the Russian tsar sent to Montenegro essential financial support to restoration of Orthodox churches.
This visit played a historical role in development of the Russian-Montenegro relations. Lord Danilo was the first Montenegro governor who established direct link with Russia. Moreover, the voyage of the Montenegro metropolitan to St. Petersburg laid the foundation of sincere friendship between two orthodox people. Within the 18-19th centuries these relations continued to become stronger, the love to Russia became a part of national consciousness of this small, in only several tens of thousands of people, the people. In Montenegro there was some kind of national cult of Russia, even the saying appeared: "Us and Russians – two hundred million".
Unusual, tremendous, fascinating, magic, mysterious - about Montenegro it is possible to tell and list many epithets, but a picture is worth a thousand words and to fall in love with this nature, the hospitable people, history, sights, kitchen and a never-ending domestic wine.
